RS232/RS485/RS422 QUESTIONS

9) WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TERMINATE RS422/RS485 NETWORKS?

Answer: End of Line Resistor Termination (120 Ohm) is an option used in conjunction with RS422 and RS485 networks. Termination is used to reduce transmission line signal reflections, lowering noise and interference on the cable. Since use of termination resistors increases the loading on the circuit, we recommend including termination resistors only when the data rate is over 19,200 baud, or when the cabling distance exceeds 660 feet (200m). Termination resistors should be used only with the devices at the ends of the network. Many of our converters come with jumpered termination resistors built-in on the terminal blocks.
